An Overview of the England National Rugby Sevens Squad
England have one of the best sevens teams in the whole series, they’ve won 17 legs of the World Sevens series which is an incredible amount for one team. They’ve generated numerous world-class players which have left their mark on the sevens series including Ben Gollings, Simon Amor and Ollie Phillips. Dan Norton is England’s all-time top try scorer with over 350 tries to his name, he’s also the all-time top try scorer in the World Rugby Sevens series and is the only player to have scored over 300 tries.
In the World Rugby sevens series, England are statistically the fourth-best team of all time behind New Zealand, Fiji and South Africa.
The first International sevens tournament was the “1973 International Seven a side Tournament” which was held in Scotland. England won this tournament after beating off the likes of Wales, France and then Ireland in the final by a scoreline of 22-18.
That was the first and only sevens tournament for the next 20 years as the International Rugby Board started the 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens. Scotland hosted the first Sevens World Cup as England won the trophy once more by beating Australia in the final 21-17.
Despite being incredibly successful in the first 2 International sevens tournaments, England didn’t win another international tournament. However, they competed in every Sevens World cup between the years of 1993 and 2018 where they had a variety of finishes from second place to eighth place. England finished second in the past two tournaments in Russia and the USA which puts them in a strong position going into the next Sevens World cup in South Africa in 2022.
England also compete in the Commonwealth Games every four years since 1998 where Rugby Sevens was introduced to the competition. England’s best result at the Commonwealth Games was finishing second in 2006 losing to New Zealand 29-21. The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be held in Birmingham, England which will be their best chance to win the Cup as they will be playing on home soil.
